The E36 M3 debuted in February of 1992. It was the second generation M3 and the first M3 to be powered by an inline six cylinder engine: the S50 engine that produced 282 horsepower. Initially only available as a coupe, BMW introduced the convertible and sedan versions in 1994. Also in 1994, BMW produced the limited edition M3 GT, all of which had a British Racing Green paint job and 291 horsepower. Only 356 GTs were built. In 1995, the M3 coupe and sedan were upgraded to 321 horsepower. At the same time, they received a 6 speed gearbox, new wheels, and clear indicator lenses. The convertible did not receive these changes until 1996. The E36 M3 was considered to be one of the best handling cars of the 1990s.
